Celestial Seasonings decaf teas are naturally decaffeinated using nontoxic carbon dioxide (CO₂), the same compound that plants breathe in daily. We do not use harsh or hazardous solvents to decaffeinate our teas. The process is commonly referred to as Supercritical CO₂ Fluid Extraction. CO₂ is usually a gas; however, at a controlled temperature and under extreme pressure, CO₂ liquefies and acts like a solvent. Liquefied CO₂ is highly selective in removing caffeine without affecting other natural components in the tea. Decaf teas are not to be confused with our naturally caffeine-free teas.
